By now, just about everyone knows someone who's used a dating site. In the UK alone, millions of men and women are looking for love online as we speak. Even if you haven't tried it already, you may well be wondering whether you should. But is it really worth it?
Online dating is popular for a reason. It's effective, efficient and, most importantly, fun. Like everything else in life, though, it's by no means perfect. Success stories, horror stories: I'm sure you've heard them all. If you're struggling to make sense of all that information, rest assured you're not alone.
Like all revolutionary things, online dating has attracted more than its fair share of hype. Confusion, naturally, ensues.
Everyone's Guide To Online Dating sets out, quite simply, to make sense of this whole mess once and for all. No hype, no blurb, just straightforward, simple advice from someone who knows the ins and outs of the industry. It's full of tips, advice and information to help make your online dating experience a better one.

About The Author
Shimrit Elisar is an online dating and socialising expert with over 15 years’ experience. In fact, her online experience predates the web itself, but she doesn't talk about that so much for fear of sounding somewhat nerdy.
She was one of the first women to use IRC, the Internet's first chat network, back when it was very, very small. She spent five years as an online moderator/customer advisor, working on various high-profile online communities and dating sites. She has probably seen more dating profiles and forum posts than most people will see in their whole lifetime and has helped countless people solve their dating problems.
When not busy writing books or talking about herself in third person, she works for Allegran Limited, the company responsible for five of the UK’s top 10 dating sites.
Frequently asked questions
- Does online dating really work?
Online dating has helped many, many people find love all over the world so yes, it definitely does work. However, there are also people for whom the experience is not that great. This is because it’s easy to make mistakes when doing something that is completely new and unfamiliar. Online dating has only really taken off in the last few years, and the fact is that it is radically different from the traditional dating methods we’re all used to. In my experience, the most common reasons behind some people’s lack of success can be easily fixed with a bit of good advice. Things like picking the wrong site, presenting yourself in a way that is unflattering or saying the wrong thing when contacting people are all extremely common and could definitely damage your chances.
Luckily, you can greatly improve your chances of success if you learn how to do things right.
- Is online dating safe?
Despite what you may have heard, online dating is no less safe than any other form of dating. There are some bad people out there, but you can protect yourself very effectively by following some very easy safety rules and keeping your wits about you. This subject is covered extensively in the book.
- I think that I am too old/too fat/ too short/ not computer literate enough to try online dating. Is there hope for me?
Online dating is for everybody. It does not have an upper age limit, nor is it restricted to those who are conventionally attractive. There are sites out there that cater to every possible shape, colour and size. The level of computer literacy needed to do it is very low. If you are reading this website and can send and receive emails, you have all the skills that you really need.
- Why should I buy this book in particular, when there are so many other guides out there?
Everyone’s Guide To Online Dating is the only book written by a dating expert working in the UK’s online dating industry. The advice within is based on many hundreds of actual case studies taken from British dating sites. It’s the only book in print today that reviews the major dating sites in the UK, as well as some lesser-known but equally excellent British sites. It’s the only book out there that takes into account the differences between the British dating scene and its American counterpart and offers advice based on life in the UK, rather than elsewhere. If you live in the UK and are dating or considering dating online, this is the only book written specifically with you in mind.
