Single on Valentine’s day? Oh my!

January 20th, 2009

It’s now pretty close to Valentine’s day, so if you are single and want to get yourself a date, you need to either try going to a singles’ party or find an online dating site that’s pretty fast paced (see below).

For the record, I don’t actually think V-day should be as much of a big deal as it obviously is for some people. It’s overly commercialised to the point where it just loses all meaning and stresses people out. Those in a relationship feel the need to prove their love in over the top ways while those who are not in one are often made to feel inadequate by the barrage of cheesy happy couply imagery. To be honest, while it’s nice to have an excuse to do something nice together as a couple, I feel sorry for couples who *need* Valentine’s day to remind them of their love for each other. But I digress.

My point is, you can easily get carried away by Valentine’s day and feel that you really must have that perfect date on that particular day to feel happy and complete. You don’t, and putting all your hopes on one day of the year is never a good idea.

I am also not a fan of overly romanticising your first date and I think having a date on a day like that could be a recipe for potential awkardness. If, however, the day is dear to your heart, there’s no need to sit around moping either. If you’ve not signed up to a dating site yet (or are not having too much luck on the one you’re on) there’s plenty of sites you can choose from. I list them by type in this category.

The closer you get to Valentine’s day, the faster you’ll need to move, so I suggest you pick a fast paced site where people go to meet up and have fun, rather than necessarily go for a more serious relationship oriented site. This is, of course, assuming you’re keen to find someone to date before the 14th of February strikes. Casual dating sites and urban dating sites are the best for that.

Many sites nowadays offer you the chance to send a personal message to a whole load of people at once (known as “carpetbombing”), so you could try this method if time is of the essence. In the UK these include:GirlsDateForFree,Loopylove.com and a bunch of others. Run a search according to your chosen criteria, write a personal-sounding message and cast your net. Just make sure you have a decent profile and picture uploaded first if you want to get results.

Another possibility is to go on a singles’ event or speed dating event if there are any in your area. Valentine’s day is a big day in the industry for obvious reasons, so unless you live in the middle of nowhere, there’s bound to be something going on somewhere reasonably close to you. I wrote about companies that organise singles’ parties earlier.

Whatever you decide to do, remember that Valentine’s day is just that – a day. There’s no need to stress about it or give it more credit than it deserves. Sometimes spending the evening chilling out with friends is far preferrable to worrying over what might or might not happen. There are 364 more days in the year you can use for meeting that special someone, so why worry?

It’s an automated programme that tries to automatically comment on blogs to advertise sites! :)
